Philips N1500
 |
1972 (widely available 1974). First domestic
VCR in the UK. Used mostly by schools, colleges and universities, from 1972
until the early 1980's, when Betamax took over. Due to it's limited tape length
initially (45 min then 60mins) and high cost of £450, few homes owned one.
Note the analogue clock, on the front right of the case, for timed
recordings

1976 -
Facelift of N1500, looking similar to the N1700, but recording and playing
N1500 tapes. Aimed more at the domestic marketplace.

Philips N1700
|
1978 -
Updated version of N1500 series. Recorded tapes at half the speed, thus
doubling play time. Found in homes from 1978 onwards, just as VHS was to hit the
market. Some were still in use in the mid 1980's. We have several examples with
conditions ranging from concours to poor.
Ideal placement would be in a
wealthy family in 1978 to early 1980's. |

Philips VR2020
 |
1980. First VCR to use the Philips designed VCC or V2000 double-sided
cassette. Ahead of it's time by the adoption of dynamic tracking, (now more
readily seen in camcorders.) We have several examples with conditions ranging
from concours to good.

Grundig 2x4 Super
 |
1982. Probably the peak of development for VCR's using the V2000 tape
format. This unit appeared in late 1982 and was way ahead of it's time with
features such as stereo sound, infra red remote control, slow motion, freeze
frame, dynamic tracking and 8 hours recording time. We have several examples
with conditions ranging from concours to good.
Ideal placement would be in a household in from 1982 to the
early 1990's. |

Panasonic NV 8600B
 |
One of
the first VHS VCR's to appear in December 1978. With no slow motion, freeze
frame or double play, it was still seen as a marvel. This unit is in very good
condition, with a green LED time, piano key operation and brushed steel finish.
One of the few VHS units in our collection.
Ideal placement would be in the
lounge of a middle/upper class household in early 1979. |

JVC HR 3300  |
One of the first VHS VCR's to appear in late 1978. It is actually a
rebadged 'JVC HR 3300 De Luxe' which was also sold in the UK as a Ferguson
Videostar. This model was used by TV rental firms,such as 'Multi broadcast'. It
is a 'top loader', has the 'cylindrical' operation keys and is finished in dark
grey and brushed aluminum.
Ideal placement would be in the
lounge of a middle class household in the early 1980's with a rented TV
set. |

| Sony SL 8080E |
1979 - One of the first Betamax based VCRs and also used in schools
and colleges. Physically larger than the Philips N1500 they replaced. Finished
in dark grey with cyan LED timer.

Sanyo VTC 5000  |
A very
popular Betamax based VCR, probably due to it's small size. It was a 'top
loader' finished in silver with blue LED timer.

 |
Strictly speaking, not a VCR, but a video player. This unit was the
forerunner to a DVD player, playing films on a 12" disk, using a similar method
to a Compact Disc.

Circa 1981. A top of the range Betamax model with colour
picture search and slow motion. Also used by schools and colleges, this model
is finished in black.

Sony VTR AV 3420  |
Circa late 1960's - A portable reel to reel video tape recorder used
by many universities, teaching and research establishments in the late 1960's
and through the 1970's. This unit comes with it's leather carry case and
camera. We have several examples ranging from good to concours.

film an outdoor activity in the late 1960's - early 1970's. |

Sony VTR AV 3620  |
Circa late 1960's. The 'big brother' of the AV 3420, a reel to reel
video tape recorder used by many universities, teaching and research
establishments in the late 1960's and 1970's. A period Sony video camera (in
average condition), can also be supplied.
Ideal placement would be used to
film a teaching presentation in the late 1960's - early 1970's.
